Measuring What Matters

At Stawi, we believe in radical transparency about our impact. We don’t just count trees planted or hives distributed—we track the real changes in farmers’ lives and communities.

Stories of Transformation

Maria’s Journey: From Subsistence to Prosperity

Before Stawi: Maria Jumbe farmed a small plot of cassava and maize, earning barely enough to feed her six children. Medical emergencies meant borrowing from neighbors. School fees were an impossible dream.

After Stawi: With 150 cashew trees in production and 8 beehives, Maria now earns over $2,000 annually. All her children attend school. She’s built a brick house with a metal roof and even hired two seasonal workers.

“I used to pray for survival. Now I plan for the future. Next year, I’m adding 100 more trees.”

The Kilwa Women’s Cooperative

The Challenge: In Kilwa District, cultural norms limited women’s control over agricultural income. Many women contributed labor but saw little financial benefit.

The Stawi Approach: We established a women-only beekeeping cooperative with direct payment to members’ mobile money accounts.

The Result: 85 women now earn independent income averaging $600/year. Household nutrition has improved, girls’ school enrollment has increased, and women report greater decision-making power at home.

“For the first time in my life, I have money that is truly mine. I decide how to spend it.” — Amina Rashid, Cooperative Member

Regenerating Degraded Land

Location: Mtwara Region, an area severely affected by deforestation and soil degradation.

Intervention: 200 farmers planted cashew trees on previously degraded farmland, integrating them with existing crops using agroforestry techniques.

Environmental Impact:

  • 50,000+ trees planted over 500 hectares
  • Soil erosion reduced by estimated 60%
  • Local biodiversity visibly recovering
  • Carbon sequestration: ~5,000 tonnes CO2/year

Economic Impact:

  • Land previously earning $50/hectare now generates $400+
  • Property values increased as land productivity improved

  • 1,200+ hectares of forest under informal farmer protection
  • Native bee populations stabilizing
  • Bird and insect diversity visibly improving in program areas

Sustainable Practices

  • Organic farming training provided to all farmers
  • Zero-deforestation commitments in supply chain
  • Water conservation techniques in processing
